Okay - if you're new to this tablet, here's how to get the most out of your amazon.com kindle fire!
STEP ONE: Buy a Kindle Fire for only $199!
It probably goes without saying, but to get the most out of the Fire, you'll actually need to own one. They started shipping from Amazon.com on 11/15/11, and were available on a first come / first serve basis. To get yours, simply visit the Kindle Fire product page on Amazon.com to pick one up.
If you're still not sure if the Kindle Fire is the right product for you, here is some background to help with your decision. If you're like me, you know you want to buy a tablet, but you don't want to pay the crazy prices being asked by Apple for their iPad. Additionally, you don't like the fact that the iPad can't play Flash websites and is so tied to iTunes that you can't do anything without paying Apple over and over and over for every single piece of content. But, you like the fact that there are tons of applications, a camera, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth, and a bunch of other bells and whistles for the iPad. So you're stuck. Is it worth buying a kindle fire and sacrificing the extra features that come with the iPad? The answer is...probably not, but it depends what you want to do.
If most of your tablet use will be in locations where a wi/fi connection is available (home or office), then you don't need the 3G or Bluetooth capabilities offered by the iPad and the Kindle Fire will be great. Think really hard about this. How often are you really using your tablet away from a wi/fi location? If it is only occassionally, would it be possible to download the content ahead of time (for example, download movies to watch on the train or email to ready later while you're waiting at the doctor's office). Most of us are rarely at a location where public or personal wi/fi isn't available. When you read Kindle Fire reviews around the web, many people note the lack of 3G connectivity as a concern, but I haven't really seen any issues with it in reality...you just have to plan ahead.
Other reviews on the web raise concerns about the Kindle Fire not having a camera, GPS, microphone, or bluetooth. Again - think long and hard about these features and determine if you really care about them. Most of us have a smart phone (probably even an iPhone) that has all that stuff. If you're looking to use FaceTime, snap photos of your kids, or record an audio reminder for later, you'll do it on your phone...not on your tablet. Don't get tricked into thinking all of those features are important for a tablet. For most of us...they wouldn't get used anyway.
Lastly, some reviews for kindle fire talk about the smaller screen size and wonder if anything is lost. My opinion is that the smaller screen is SOOOO much better than the larger screen of the iPad. It's easier to fit in a bag to carry around, and it's the perfect size to palm/hold with one hand. The larger screen requires two hands to hold and makes is VERY hard to read lying in bed or holding on to the rail in the subway. In any case, if the larger screen is important to you, hold off for a few months and get the larger size kindle fire that is rumored to be coming in 2012 (unconfirmed rumor).
STEP TWO: Sign Up for Amazon Prime Immediately!
The first thing you need to do is sign up for Amazon Prime. For less than you paid for cable last month (only $79 for the whole year), you'll get unlimited streaming to thousands of movies
and TV shows
. You also get a FREE kindle book every month from the Kindle Owner's Lending Library. Both of these features are well worth the price for the service...not to mention that you'll get free 2-Day shipping on all eligible purchases at Amazon.com.
STEP THREE: Buy These Apps
1) Exchange By TouchDown Key
- If you're planning on connecting your Kindle Fire to your work's Exchange server for email, contacts, etc, this is the application that does it. Make sure you download and try the TRIAL version first before you pay the $30 for the full version we're linking to here.
2) Read It Later Pro
- Download web pages and online content when you have a wi/fi connection and read it later when you are offline. A must have application for the Kindle Fire.
3) SwiftKey X
- This is an alternative "smart" keyboard for your Kindle Fire. It anticipates what word you are typing next and makes typing much easier on the screen.
